Google and SpaceX are reportedly discussing a groundbreaking project to launch data centers into Earth’s orbit. Currently, data centers on the ground consume massive amounts of electricity and require expensive cooling systems to keep servers from overheating. By moving these servers into space, tech companies can take advantage of the natural freezing temperatures of the vacuum to cool the hardware for free.
Additionally, these orbital stations would have direct access to constant sunlight, allowing them to run entirely on solar energy without any interference from clouds or night cycles. SpaceX’s Starship is expected to play a key role in transporting the heavy hardware into space. While this technology is still about ten years away, it could solve the growing energy crisis caused by the rise of AI and high-speed internet demands.
